PS Plus users have been informed that they are entitled to the recently released free PS5 upgrade for one of the best PS4 action adventure games. Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition‘s PS5 port is already available to existing owners at no additional cost. However, PS Plus users have yet to receive the freebie.
Hollow Knight PS5 game free for PS Plus members, but there’s a catch
Team Cherry has confirmed that the PS5 upgrade should be available to PS Plus subscribers. The studio is aware that the new release hasn’t gone live for members yet, and said that it is “speaking to Sony to resolve this issue.”
At the time of this writing, the freebie still hasn’t become available. But there are two things players need to note: 1. As usual, the PS Store listing update for Hollow Knight has triggered the long-running glitch that causes games to disappear from the PS Plus Extra catalog. 2. The free version apparently won’t be available to those who claimed Hollow Knight as a monthly freebie back in 2020.
On the first point, we’ve written about this issue at length before. The gist is that Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition is part of the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog. However, those who didn’t add the game to their library/download it before the PS5 port’s launch won’t be able to see it in the catalog until the PS Store is updated properly. Do not purchase the game yet if you’re a PS Plus Extra/Premium member! Wait for Hollow Knight to reappear in the catalog.
On the second point, Team Cherry’s statement says that the free PS5 upgrade is “for PS+ Game Catalog players.” Since Essential/monthly games are not the same as the PS Plus “catalog,” we don’t think this freebie will be available to those who claimed the game in November 2020.
