Larian Studios is not involved in the upcoming Baldur’s Gate TV series

The announcement of the Baldur’s Gate series was cause for celebration among fans of the franchise. Directed by Craig Mazin (The Last of Us), this adaptation will depict events that take place after the story of the third game.

While this storyline will offer even greater creative freedom, it is also important to note that Larian Studios is not involved in the project. This was stated by Geoff Keighley, creator of The Game Awards, on X. A member of the Belgian firm confirmed this information to him.

Also on social media, Michael Douse, head of publishing at Larian, posted several rather offensive messages about the adaptation. In particular, he stated that he would refuse to act as a consultant on the series if HBO offered him the role. He also shared posts from people saying they would not watch it.

For his part, Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, was more supportive of the project.

“Crazy that a story that started out in a small hotel conference room eventually evolved into a narrative inspiring enough for it to become a HBO series.”

“We worked incredibly hard on making Baldur’s Gate 3 worthy of its legacy. Its characters and narratives are the result of many teams working together and I think I can speak for them all in saying that they’ll think this is cool and hope that what comes next will enjoy the same level of passion.”

“The endings of BG3 were created so they could serve as narrative soil for new adventures. There’s plenty of directions they could go. I’m eager to find out which ones Craig and his team will pick. He’s reached out for a chat so we’ll have the opportunity to tell him our thoughts.”

“Crossing fingers that the story we’re cooking up for Divinity will eventually grow to the same heights. Certainly putting in the hours :).”
