When Nintendo censors violence in its Direct games… by playing badly

The recent Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase gave us a glimpse of several third-party games that will soon be released on Switch 2. This list includes mature and violent titles.

The Japanese company has found an original way to “censor” such violence. Many journalists and Internet users have highlighted this maneuver on social media. The technique is quite simple, as it only requires showing gameplay clips of people playing extremely poorly.

The most telling example is Resident Evil Requiem. In the trailer shown during the Direct, Leon Kennedy constantly misses his target. He deliberately shoots past a zombie, misses another by a wide margin with his sniper rifle, and is unable to deliver a chainsaw blow to an opponent facing him (around 1:25). In addition, various shots are cut just before a blow is delivered.

Finally, the trailer for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle underwent similar treatment when we see Indy firing his gun into the water rather than at his enemies (at 0:45). This is a gentle way to tone down the violence, and we can only hope that these games won’t actually be censored when they are released on Switch 2.
