An Assassin’s Creed multiplayer project has reportedly been cancelled

Ubisoft’s recent restructuring seems to have killed another project in development at the Annecy-based studio. This was a multiplayer title codenamed “AC League”.

In an article published by the Origami website (which contacted half a dozen people working for the publisher), we learn more about the nature of this game. The 85 people involved in this production were working on DLC for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. It was supposed to close the season pass with missions that could be played cooperatively by four players.

Unfortunately, the project began to stall and the chosen expansion format was increasingly criticized. In the end, management wanted to either add “AC League” to another game in development or make it a standalone co-op title. The latter option was chosen, and the company hoped to organize test sessions as early as May 2026.

In the end, the creation of Vantage Studios and the review of projects in production proved fatal for the game. However, the work done should not be completely thrown away, as Ubisoft wants to implement the techniques created for “League” into the Anvil engine, all with the aim to use these cooperative mechanics in a future Assassin’s Creed game.

It’s always disappointing to hear about cancelled projects, especially in a beloved franchise like Assassin’s Creed. It will be interesting to see how Ubisoft shifts its focus moving forward. Hopefully, fans will still have exciting content to look forward to!

I completely agree; it’s tough to see potential experiences go unrealized in such a popular series. It makes you wonder how many other interesting ideas might be on the cutting room floor at Ubisoft due to these changes. Let’s hope they channel their resources into new innovations that can excite fans!

Absolutely, it’s disappointing when promising projects don’t come to fruition. It’s interesting to think about how much the multiplayer aspect could have added to the franchise’s rich lore and community engagement. Hopefully, Ubisoft will find a way to incorporate multiplayer elements in future titles.

I completely agree; it’s always tough to see potential projects slip away. It’s worth noting that this cancellation might also impact the overall direction of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, as multiplayer elements had the potential to expand its universe significantly.
