Stardew Valley is finally receiving a highly requested fan feature with the free 1.7 update.
Stardew Valley is a prime example of what it means to be an indie darling. When it was released in 2016, it was developed by just one person, Eric Barone, under his studio, ConcernedApe. Which makes it all the more impressive that it’s not only still going strong 10 years later, but the game remains as fun as ever.
“You’ve inherited your grandfather’s old farm plot in Stardew Valley. Armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, you set out to begin your new life. Can you learn to live off the land and turn these overgrown fields into a thriving home?” reads the synopsis of the game.
ConcernedApe has expanded over the years, bringing in new developers to help maintain the flow of free content updates for Stardew Valley, as well as the upcoming release of its spiritual successor, Haunted Chocolatier.

As reported by IGN, with the upcoming arrival of 1.7 update, in celebration of the game’s 10th anniversary, Eric Barone has confirmed that Stardew Valley will be getting brand new marriage candidates. Happy days!
“I’m trying not to reveal too much because I like for it to be a surprise. What I will say without maybe being too specific is that with this update, one of the things we’re trying to do is… Well, there is a popular fan request, which has to do with the children, trying to make the children a little more interesting,” Barone told IGN.
“So I’m trying to do something with that, but there’s a lot of other things in the update as well that no one’s really asked for, but I think people will appreciate it. I’m going to be adding two more marriage candidates, but I’ll reveal who it is on the anniversary day.”
Stardew Valley’s anniversary falls on 26 February. New marriage candidates are something that fans have wanted for years, and no doubt, they’ll be over the moon that two more are finally on the way.
As of right now, there have only been two marriage candidates since the game launched, and that’s Emily and Shane.
Who Could the Marriage Candidates Be?
I’ve got four names in mind.
First up, Sandy. Now, I have no idea how this could work with the desert trader. There’s no way I can buy all my Starfruit seeds from the comfort of our home, right? Either way, Sandy feels like the biggest missed opportunity. She’s warm, mysterious, and criminally underused. Plus her and Emily can hang out more at the Stardrop Saloon, and I’d hope I’d get a discount on the masses of pepper poppers and coffee I buy there. I kid – no marriage candidate has perks like that to address fairness. Every girl and boy is best girl and boy!
Next, one that goes under the radar a bit. Talking of the Stardrop Saloon – Gus. He’s a real father figure (some might say Daddy? I would) to the town. We love a soft, dependable man, one with a heart of gold as he feeds Linus for free.
Hear me out – Willy. Minds out the gutter – he’s the beloved fisherman that takes you to Ginger Island. I’m already in there enough buying bait and oading my seawater crab pots. Lonely at sea? Not on my watch!
Finally – Caroline. F*** Pierre, my real ones know. Between her hidden greenhouse, tea obsession, and hinted past with the Wizard, many players feel Caroline has unresolved narrative threads that would make her a compelling romance.
We don’t know who the new marriage candidates will be at this time, but hopefully, they will be revealed sooner rather than later. With a bit of luck, 1.7 update will also drop soon.
Stardew Valley is out now on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices.
