The storefront reached an all-time record of 78 million monthly active users on PC, and 6.65 billion total gameplay hours were logged in 2025. Epic did note that overall gameplay hours declined year over year, while hours spent in third-party titles increased by 4%. Here’s a closer look at how Epic’s 2025 was shaped by record user numbers, free games, and significant spending.

Total PC users reached a new high

Live-service games continued to dominate in 2025

Epic arranged its top PC games according to three tiers: Mythic, Legendary, and Epic. At the very top of the list are several live-service titles, with Fortnite unsurprisingly leading the pack. In fact, all of the games in this category are free-to-play games, including the popular Genshin Impact, Rocket League, and Honkai Star Rail.

In the Legendary tier, EA Sports FC 25 was at the top, followed by more free-to-play games like Zenless Zone Zero and Infinity Nikki. Grand Theft Auto 5 continues to be popular more than a decade after its release, while Dead by Daylight also drew in plenty of players. The Epic tier included several hit games like Arc Raiders, Alan Wake 2, Borderlands 4, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Dead Island 2 and Hogwarts Legacy also appeared on this list, likely because they were Epic Games Store freebies for a week.

What’s next for the Epic Games Store in 2026?

Following last year’s improvements to the storefront–such as a new download manager and enhanced discovery–Epic is planning to rebuild the platform’s underlying architecture. “These changes will make the storefront on the launcher responsive and feel good to use, with fast load times and greater stability,” Epic said in a press release. ” To create a better social experience for players, we’re creating community spaces in the Epic Games Store and enhancing cross-platform text chat with features like avatars, player profiles, and private messaging.”

Epic will also extend these features to its online services, and in Q2, it will add voice chat and game-independent parties to its social framework. It also plans to become more developer-friendly by launching an official program to help studios and publishers sell more games through the storefront, leveraging Fortnite’s popularity. Players who purchase participating games will get a Fortnite cosmetic along with a matching character avatar for their Epic account profile.

Later in 2026, a cross-platform library for players across PC and mobile will be added, and regional storefronts with localized discovery are also in the pipeline.
