PS5 update adds new theme / background

Sony quietly dropped a new PS5 theme via a feature update this morning, and it’s not exactly its best effort. The Welcome Hub now has a new background based on the upcoming Bungie game Marathon, and it exudes no enthusiasm.

PS5 feature update adds its most low-effort background yet

The theme in question is simply the Marathon art pictured above in static form. It’s only the second video game-based background officially released by Sony that’s not animated. The only other game-based theme available in the Welcome Hub that doesn’t come with any animation is based on MLB: The Show.

It’s a pointless addition, then, because players can create a better theme themselves, especially after Marathon launches in March and they have more assets to play with. What sets official backgrounds apart from player-generated ones is the animations and unique, static PlayStation-themed imagery.

Not a dealbreaker, but still, some animation would have been a nice touch.

On a related note, both the PS5 and PS4 have received system firmware updates today. If the aforementioned theme or the system update isn’t available to you yet, you’ll have to wait a little bit, as Sony said that it plans to gradually roll them out in phases.
