Magic: The Gathering Is Bringing Back The Mystical Archives (And Going Hard On Marvel Super Heroes)

There’s Magic in the air

With Lorwyn Eclipsed now available and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on its way, Wizards of the Coast has traveled to the Nuremberg Toy Fair in Germany to offer fans a glimpse into the not-so-distant future. Today, we have an exclusive look at the packs, decks, and bundles coming to both April’s Secrets of Strixhaven and June’s Marvel Super Heroes sets–as well as a few cards from the magic school of Strixhaven.

The product lines for both sets will cater to new and established players alike, with multiple pack types, bundles, and a total of nine preconstructed Commander decks between the two sets. Secrets of Strixhaven also boasts a unique bundle that includes, among other things, new treatments for six popular Commander cards.

Magic: The Gathering’s Secrets of Strixhaven expansion launches April 24 in local game stores and big box retailers, while the Marvel Super Heroes set is set to launch on June 26. Preorders will be live today at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET, and you can check out the gallery below for everything you need to know about both releases.

Secrets of Strixhaven Play Boosters

  • MSRP: $5.49 per pack

The standard Play Boosters for Secrets of Strixhaven will contain 14 cards of varying rarities, including a randomized foil card, as well as a chance for a unique Booster Fun card. Play Boosters will also be used for any sealed or limited events at local game stores.

Secrets of Strixhaven Collector Boosters

  • MSRP: $26.99 per pack

Collector Boosters contain the rarest cards available in each set, from special treatments to alternate foil versions of some Booster Fun cards.

As for some of the cards you may find in Play and Collector Boosters…

Lorehold, the Historian (Mythic Rare)

We can exclusively reveal the first elder dragon card of Secrets of Strixhaven: Lorehold, the Historian!

Lorehold is a 5-power, 5-toughness legendary elder dragon with flying and haste that costs three generic, one red, and one white mana to cast. He also comes with the ability to give every Instant and Sorcery card in your deck Miracle with a cost of two generic mana–which means that whenever you draw the first card in a turn, if it’s an Instant or Sorcery, you can immediately pay two generic mana to cast it, whatever it is.

That’s not all; Lorehold also lets you discard a card to draw a card on every upkeep, even your opponents–and that Miracle keyword applies to those cards, too. The value in this creature is immense, and certainly worthy of an elder dragon.

Before we reveal our next card, it’s important we ask you this question: do you like math?

Mathemagics (Mythic Rare)

We never thought we see an exponent on a Magic card, but here we are. Mathemagics is a Sorcery spell that costs XX generic (meaning you choose what X is, but you have to pay it twice) and two blue mana. When you cast it, you can draw 2 to the Xth power cards–and since you determine was X is, you can draw as much as you want. Thankfully, if you’re not good at exponential math, a few examples are provided for you.

We technically only have one more card to reveal for Secrets of Strixhaven, but it comes in three separate versions, and marks the return of one of the best parts of the original Strixhaven set: The Mystical Archive bonus sheet.

Mystical Archive returns!

The Strixhaven set from 2021 included a bonus sheet called the Mystical Archive, which featured multiple reprints from Magic’s history with unique artwork. There were two versions of each card; one in English, and another in Japanese with unique artwork from Japanese artists and in a traditional Japanese style.

Both the English and Japanese Mystical Archives will return in Secrets in Strixhaven, with the Japanese cards receiving a special Silver Scroll foil variant. The first card revealed for the new Mystical Archives is here in Japanese–can you guess what it is? The English version is below.

Stock Up (Mystical Archive variant)

It’s Stock Up from last year’s Aetherdrift expansion!

The Aetherdrift uncommon has become a staple in decks running blue for its card selection capabilities at a good mana cost, so naturally it’s already receiving its first major reprint 14 months later. More Mystical Archive cards will be revealed in the future.

Secrets of Strixhaven Draft Night

  • MSRP: $89.99

The Draft Night bundle that debuted with Lorwyn Eclipsed returns, once again providing the materials for a fun draft night with your friends. There’s ten packs for drafting, as well as a Collector Booster included as the top prize for the winner.

Secrets of Strixhaven Bundle

  • MSRP: $57.99

Secrets of Strixhaven will also receive the Bundle set that players have come to expect, with nine Play Boosters, a promo card, and a Strixhaven-themed spindown 20-sided die. However, this normal bundle isn’t the only one coming with Secrets of Strixhaven, as there’s another with a few extra items inside.

Secrets of Strixhaven Codex Bundle

  • MSRP: $89.99

The limited Codex Bundle puts a new spin on the usual Bundle package, with six Play Boosters and two Collector Boosters included with 20 foil lands and a spin-down die. Codex Bundles also include Codex Boosters, a mini-pack containing two of a possible six alternate-art foil versions of commonly-used Artifact card.

Those six cards are below.

Codex Booster Cards

Sol Ring and five Talismans, one to match the colors of each of the five schools of Strixhaven, make up the six special cards contained in Codex Boosters. Each Codex Bundle will contain one Codex Booster pack, and each pack contains two of these six cards.
