Insiders are in dispute over the state of the Watch Dogs franchise, following a spree of cancellations at Ubisoft.

Prince Of Persia may have had the worst of it, following Ubisoft’s company restructure last week, but there is also a big question over the future of Watch Dogs, especially as it hasn’t been mentioned in some time.

The last mainline title was 2020’s mediocre Watch Dogs: Legion, which was a sales flop. No new games have been announced since, with a movie adaptation starring Tom Blyth, which still doesn’t have a release date, being the only confirmed project keeping the IP alive.

Reports last year suggested the Watch Dogs franchise, at least in terms of games, had been quietly killed off, and now another insider has stated the same in 2026.

Speaking on the Insider Gaming podcast, about Ubisoft’s future prospects, insider Tom Henderson stated the Watch Dogs IP ‘is completely dead’ following Watch Dogs: Legion.

However, this claim has since been disputed by another notable insider, shinobi602, on ResetEra, who responded to a clip of Henderson’s comments with ‘not exactly’.

When asked if they’re referring to the movie, or a new game, shinobi602 replied: ‘I am not talking about a movie.’

In a follow-up comment on Reddit, Henderson suggested shinobi602 was alluding to a rumoured project called Watch Dogs Coterie, which, according to Henderson, is apparently ‘nothing more than people who like the franchise, concept art, basic [research and development]’ within Ubisoft.

To muddy the waters, shinobi602 later clarified this isn’t what they were referring to, prompting another response about the state of Watch Dogs from Henderson.

‘From my knowledge, it’s as alive as, let’s say, Eidos-Montréal working on Deus Ex again or something,’ he posted on Reddit.

Those types of games are built into the foundation of teams and always talked about/ideated because of the passion they have for those franchises, ‘it’d be cool if we could do this’, ‘hey look at this concept art I did’, etc, but until the greenlight is given, it’s just an idea.

‘If he’s not referring to the Coterie, then I have no idea what he’s talking about.’

To summarise, it seems unlikely that any new major Watch Dogs sequel is in development, but shinobi602’s comments suggest something related is in the pipeline – possibly a 60fps update for previous titles in the series (like the recent update for Far Cry 3) or even some kind of remaster.

Either way, any passion for the franchise within Ubisoft could be threatened by expected staff exits at the company, following the recent slate of cancellations. According to reports, several employees have seen the recent restructuring as the ‘final nail in the coffin for them’, as they seek employment elsewhere.

What this means for Ubisoft’s future prospects remains to be seen, but the company’s rumoured future slate includes several Assassin’s Creed titles, a new Far Cry, a new Rayman project, and a successor to Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
