Final Fantasy VII Remake Part III will still use Unreal Engine 4

Since the first installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, Square Enix has decided to use the Unreal Engine 4. It’s already a bit outdated, though, and many developers have turned to Unreal Engine 5.

However, the Japanese publisher does not intend make the jump to the latest version for the third and final installment of its remake saga. Naoki Hamaguchi, the series director, has announced that Final Fantasy VII Remake 3 will continue to use Unreal Engine 4 in order to minimize risks. This should also allow the next episode to run smoothly on Switch 2.

“We’ve been using Unreal Engine 4, but we’ve made a lot of modifications to fit our needs. It’s more beneficial to have something we’re already familiar with and have customized to fit our needs.”
