Bright side
Well, what a miserable state of affairs at Ubisoft. I don’t know what to say other than the amount of mismanagement must be off the scale. The Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time remake was stopped and restarted how many times in the end? Three? Four?
I do like to think on the positive side of things though and Assassin’s Creed Shadows was a good game, that benefited from the extra polishing time they gave it. If the new plan is to follow that example for all their games, then maybe things will work out. Although, maybe that’s being too optimistic.
I did used to like Ubisoft as a publisher. I doubt many people would call them their favourite, and I certainly wouldn’t, but I enjoyed the early Assassin’s Creed games, pretty much all the Far Cry games, and Splinter Cell. I would say my favourite was Rayman Legends though. I still play it to this day and I hope the rumours of a new one are true.
Curious what readers would say is their favourite, if they’re trying to say positive.

GC: Three times for Prince Of Persia, as far as we understand.
Try, try again
Well, that looks like the beginning of the end of Ubisoft. I’m not saying cancelling Prince Of Persia is necessarily a mistake but when you’re cancelling three attempts at a new IP and pivoting to live service games, generative AI, and what sounds like yearly sequels it feels like you’ve already given up.
Ubisoft’s absolute refusal to learn from its constant failures has me feeling very little sympathy for them, beyond the poor people that are going to lose their jobs, or already have.
Stop the live service obsession! Even Sony has got a grip on themselves with that, and cut back, and they’ve actually had a hit with Helldivers 2. Ubisoft has had nothing, since I don’t count Rainbow Six Siege as that was popular before live service games were even really a thing.
I don’t know what to say beyond that, other than how can a remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag be taking so long? It’s a remake, if you can’t even manage that in a reasonable amount of time I’m not surprised you’re in trouble.

Justice for CGI
Very interesting comments from the Pirates of the Caribbean director about Unreal Engine. I have definitely noticed the fall in quality in movie effects over the years, with a lot of it looking brown and hazy and completely unreal… ironically.
I think Justice League was probably one of the ugliest films I ever saw. Some directors really seem to know how to handle CGI and effects, but Zack Snyder is not one of them.
Still, it’s fascinating to see what was once only for games can now be used for movie quality effects. Or at least, close to movie quality. I’m not even going to ask why they stopped using what they had before, because I already know it’s going to be because Unreal Engine must be cheaper.

Product of UK
I don’t know if you’re going to get a bunch of people saying they wish they’d use the anime style design for Tomb Raider but yeesh, I’m glad they didn’t. Not only does it look ugly as hell but how would that be appropriate for what is one of the few British made games where parts of it, at least, are actually set in the UK.
It’s made by Americans now, because of course it is, but for a while there it was a Great British export you could be proud of. Maybe the new Amazon can revive though, because I do like what I’ve seen of it so far.
I didn’t realise Toby Gard was involved with the games up until so recently though, that was an interesting bit of info. I wonder if they’re going to consult with him for the new remake.

Marketing partners
Just seen Sony isn’t really bothered about GTA 6 but do you think it’s a bluff and they have got some sort of deal on it. You know, like an advertising deal or free GTA cash or even, say, 30 days exclusivity with the game.
It’s going to be the biggest launch in history and Sony are like, yeah, OK, whatever. Surely they could of agreed some sort of deal. I remember when GTA 5 was coming to PlayStation 4 they had a deal where every month you got so much free GTA cash, so could it be that kind of secret deal?

GC: We think it was essentially a paid ad, as we said in our article. Either that or they’ve had a massive falling out with Rockstar, because they’ve long been rumoured to have a marketing deal for the game. But for hardware bundles and advertising, not free anything.
Ever decreasing circles
It’s sad to see all the predictions about Ubisoft going under and there being hardly any big publishers left is becoming true. Even if they don’t go under, there’s no way Ubisoft are ‘big’ anymore, they’re in full panic mode are only going to do the most obvious and risk adverse games ever.
Which leaves us with EA and Take-Two as independent companies, both of which hardly make any games anymore, except for their biggest sellers.
Last year proved that indie developers can fill the gap to a degree, but only to a certain degree. I agree with the Reader’s Feature a few weeks ago, that complained bout the lack of big budget action games.
It’s true and there’s so much else that we don’t get anymore that was commonplace even last gen. We’re heading to a future where every publisher only makes two or three different games and only has one or two of them coming out each year.
Even Nintendo’s output has slowed to a crawl, because you just can’t make modern games that quickly anymore. Everything is going wrong and most people won’t even admit it, let alone do anything about it.

Low power mode
I don’t think GTA 6 on Switch 2 is completely impossible. As good as those trailers look, they’re being taken in the best possible circumstances and the game’s never going to look exactly like that when you’re playing it.
Lower the resolution and frame rate, and maybe have alternative low poly character models, and I’m sure the Switch 2 can handle it. As far as I understand that’s how Sony’s Power Saver mode works anyway and you’re probably right that something similar can be done on the Switch 2.
There’s no way Sony and Rockstar aren’t going to want GTA 6 on the new portable and that’s going to mean compromises. And that’s before you even start talking about a PC version.

A game of two halves
Can’t believe we’re on the verge of the new Resident Evil Requiem game being released! It makes me wonder if it is going to follow the familiar process of past titles by having a slow and atmospheric, tension building start to the game. Then after the dramatic halfway game reveal it turns into a third or first person action shooter, with all the quiet qualities turning to high octane explosions and gunplay.
The last two Resi games have been very good and definitely enjoyable, and I loved both the linked plotlines and learning about the lore and how it’s all connected. So the new title’s take is controlling an FBI agent, with slower gameplay. Then Leon enters the scene and do you think he’s going to be stealthy and quiet? Well, maybe at some points but I can’t imagine the game, when nearing its climax, would be slow-paced anymore.
I have not been looking at any possible spoiler previews, apart from the initial showcasing of the game at The Game Awards. So I want to go into this as unaware as possible, as making the most of a new Resident Evil title is not to be taken lightly! I feel this is going to be my game of the year, but if this year is like last year, then who knows.
I always felt Alan Wake 1 and 2 were the correct flow of how to structure a game from start to finish and I agree with Dezinavlag Remag commenting on GameCentral’s 6/10 score for Alan Wake 2, one of my all-time favourite games ever! How could you GC! Only joking.

Now that Doug Bowser has joined Hasbro, he needs to do the right thing and have his name legally changed to Doug Megatron.

GC: We’d accept Doug Prime.
The Office in Fortnite is very odd but nobody seems to care about pretending to shoot all those pop stars so I guess it’s no worse than that. I’m glad my kid doesn’t like it though.
