Could the Hytale scenario repeat itself with New World? This week, Amazon announced that the servers for its MMORPG will close on January 31, 2027. However, one figure in the video game industry seems ready to come to the rescue.
On X, Alistair McFarlane, COO of Facepunch Studios (Rust, Garry’s Mod), offered Amazon $25 million to buy back the rights to New World. He also added that “games should never disappear.”
“As with everything we do at Facepunch, we empower the community. Give them control, make the servers accessible to everyone. A game will live forever in the hands of an engaged community.”
It remains to be seen whether Amazon will be receptive to this proposal. For Hytale, Riot Games was also called upon on social media to transfer the rights to the game in order to save it from cancellation. Such a practice could become quite common.
