A new report claims that next-gen consoles, including the PS6, could see their release date windows delayed due to extortionate RAM prices. RAM availability has become an issue due to demand for AI, which has in turn pushed prices up.
Could PS6 release date break the traditional 7-year cycle?
This report comes from reliable insider Tom Henderson. Writing for his publication Insider Gaming, Henderson claims to have heard that console manufacturers are considering delaying the release of their next-gen units because of concerns over cost of production, and consequently, the price of new consoles.
Sony and Microsoft have already struggled with console prices this gen, with both PS5 and Xbox getting price hikes that have ultimately hurt demand in some regions.
The report suggests that the ongoing RAM fiasco could lead to further price hikes for PS5 and Xbox in 2026.
Insider Gamingβs report seems to corroborate rumors of next-gen consoles originally targeting a late 2027 release window, in line with what is now a traditional seven-year cycle. However, with RAM prices throwing a spanner in the works, this could change.
βFrom what we understand, the situation has led console manufacturers to debate whether the next generation of consoles should be delayed from their intended 2027-2028 release window, with the hope that RAM manufacturers will be able to build out their infrastructure to produce more RAM,β Henderson wrote.
