Fans are concerned about Naughty Dog’s next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet
In a new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Naughty Dog worked mandatory overtime in order to finish a demo for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet for an upcoming review by Sony as the studio missed multiple deadlines. Specifically, beginning in late October, employees were asked to work a minimum of eight extra hours a week, and a maximum of 60 hours a week. They were then to log their overtime hours in an internal spreadsheet. For most of the staff, this period of mandated overtime has concluded this week as the demo is finished, and the studio will go back to its normal hours through the end of January.
The report has sparked some concern over Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet for a couple of reasons. One of those reasons, beyond the obvious issues tied with crunch, involves Naughty Dog’s missed deadlines. Some fans believe the studio won’t release for PlayStation’s current generation of hardware.
“Anyway, the article mentions that the game is targeting to be released in mid-2027,” says Reddit user nolifebr. “Knowing [Naughty Dog], I would not rule out a delay to early/mid 2028.”
“You’re being a bit optimistic, this game is launching with next generation [PS6] in 2028 at the minimum,” replies Reddit user imitzFinn.
“This generation is hopeless,” says Reddit user Itsalwaysblu3.
This is not the first time a report regarding crunch at Naughty Dog has surfaced. Back in 2019, former Naughty Dog employees recalled their experience working for the studio and their unfavorable workplace practices. Another report came out at the beginning of 2020 that expanded on the matter.
