The new Tomb Raider games have a new Lara Croft, and she’s an unbelievable choice, it has to be said.
Ever since the first game was released in 1996, Tomb Raider has been one of my favourite series of all time. Sure, the series hasn’t always been perfect, like most, but there’s no denying that Lara Croft has provided countless memories for millions of fans across the world.
At The Game Awards last night, two new Tomb Raider games were announced. One is a new story that seems to reference the previous games, judging by its reveal trailer, and the other is a new remake of the original. What’s more, Lara Croft has a new actor, taking over from Camilla Luddington of the ‘Survivor Trilogy’.
Lara Croft’s new actor is Alix Wilton Regan, whom GAMINGbible recently spoke with about the cancelled Perfect Dark reboot and her desire for Aya from 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins to have her own game.
After speaking to her for only 20 minutes, we can see why she has been cast in this role. She has the voice, the swagger and most importantly, the talent to play Lara Croft.
Over the years, we’ve had various iterations of Lara Croft, whether she’s got a new look or portrayed by different actors. Each of those Lara Crofts is awesome in their own way.
Each Lara Croft Leaves a Legacy
The first actor to play Lara Croft was Shelley Blond; she was followed by Judith Gibbins, Jonell Elliott, and Camilla Luddington.
The most recent is Hayley Atwell in the Netflix animated series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which has entered its second season, available to stream now.
Let’s not forget about Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in the live-action movies.
As of right now, we’ve got three different actors who will be playing Lara Croft. The aforementioned Hayley Atwell, Sophie Turner in Amazon’s live-action adaptation, and now Alix Wilton Regan.
As confirmed on the official Tomb Raider website, Alix Wilton Regan will play Lara Croft in both Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis (the remake) and Tomb Raider: Catalyst.
The development of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be a collaboration between Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, the latter has developed the rebooted Shadow Warrior, as well as Trek to Yomi, Evil West, to name a few. The game will be released in 2026.
As for Tomb Raider: Catalyst, this will be exclusively developed by Crystal Dynamics and will be released sometime in 2027.
Both will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and launch on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
