John Romero’s FPS has ultimately been saved

When Microsoft carried out its major wave of layoffs last July, it also withdrew funding from various projects. This was particularly the case for an FPS developed by John Romero, the creator of DOOM.

At the time, there was even talk of Romero Games closing down completely, before this was ultimately denied. This week, Romero confirmed that the project has been saved from cancellation, but that it has also undergone significant changes.

“No fewer than 110 people are working on the game. It has been completely redesigned, but we are reusing many elements. We’re not starting from scratch. We can take elements and integrate them into a brand new independent game. We have a lot to put into it. The design is completely different, but the team is very enthusiastic about this new project.

It will be a “more modest” game, but still “more stimulating” to create thanks to total creative freedom. Romero promises to design a shooter with a unique experience, “just as the Elden Ring experience was truly revolutionary.”
