GTA 5 Reaffirms Canon Ending, if It Was Ever in Doubt

A popular GTA V canon ending has been reconfirmed following a reveal regarding the next major ā€˜Mansion’ update for GTA Online.

Rockstar Games might have much of its focus on the development of GTA VI, but that doesnt mean that GTA V will be left in the rearview mirror, especially when it comes to its online offering. Well, at least for the immediate future.

Originally released in 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, without question, GTA V is the most popular entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, at least from a commercial perspective. It’s why Rockstar Games has released it on every console generation since its initial launch.

Since its launch, GTA V has made nearly 10 billion as of this year and no doubt, Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, will be hoping that GTA VI achieves even greater success.

The commercial success of GTA V is a main reason why Rockstar Games isn’t quite done with the game yet, even more so when it comes to its seemingly never-ending cash cow that is GTA Online.

Rockstar Games has supported GTA Online with a wealth of free expansion-sized content updates, bringing a whole host of new features, story and activities to the world of Los Santos.

The constant flurry of new content not only helps to maintain an active player audience, but the more people play GTA Online, the more sales they will make with its in-game currency, courtesy of its Shark Cards.

Its most recent update arrives later this week on Wednesday, 10 December, with ā€˜Safehouse in the Hills’, otherwise known as GTA Online’s highly anticipated ā€œMansion Updateā€ as dubbed by fans.

Revealed in a new trailer last week, GTA Online’s ā€˜Safehouse in the Hills’ sees one of GTA V’s three protagonists (or accurately, antagonists) return with Michael De Santa, played by Ned Luke.

GTA V Ending Spoilers Ahead!

I am about to venture into major spoilers for the three optional GTA V endings, so consider this to be your final spoiler warning. That said, I won’t spoil how events unfold after you’ve made one of those three choices, so I will be as vague as possible.

At the end of GTA V, players are presented with three optional endings. Ending A: Devin Weston asks you to kill Trevor Phillips. Ending B: Kill Michael. Ending C: Trevor, Franklin and Michael all live.

Ending three, known as ā€œDeathwishā€, is perhaps the most popular choice, and it’s the one that I certainly went with. However, with three intriguing endings on the table, despite the confirmation, it remains open to debate as to which is the true canon.

With that in mind, this week’s ā€˜Safehouse in the Hills’ update has pretty much reconfirmed that ā€œDeathwishā€ is the canon ending with Michael’s return, which, of course, comes as no surprise to GTA V fans.

GTA Online’s ā€˜Safehouse in the Hills’ update will download and install when you fire up the game on Wednesday. Typically, updates go live sometime in the morning in the UK.

As for Grand Theft Auto VI, that will be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 19 November 2026.
