Arc Raiders has been out for just over a month, and in that time, it’s shifted from an intriguing spin on the extraction shooter to an essential entry in the genre. You drop into various zones to gather resources and complete quests across a world overrun by powerful mechanised enemies known as ARC. These foes come in several forms, from the relatively harmless flying drones to devastating threats like a massive rolling sphere and a heavily armed mech walker.
But the real draw isn’t the premise, it’s the atmosphere. Arc Raiders delivers a much stronger “us vs. them” energy than most extraction shooters, creating unforgettable moments as you roam the map. During my first encounter with another player, we ended up frantically waving to signal peace, realising that surviving mattered far more than getting greedy.
That’s not to say the combat falls short. Weapons rarely feel overpowered, yet each one has a satisfying feedback loop that makes it distinct. The ability to upgrade your loadout over several runs lets you tailor gear to your playstyle. This makes firefights with ARC units worthwhile even when you’re outmatched, and often encourages players to band together against the mechanical threats to chase a bit more loot.
Of course, cooperation doesn’t last forever; there’s always a chance things end in a gunfight. Still, whether you walk away with loot or a lesson, Arc Raiders rarely feels like it’s wasting your time. Expect plenty of memorable encounters (good, bad, and everything in between) with both players and the ARC roaming the world.
