Fallout 4 is still going strong 10 years after launch, partly thanks to a new Anniversary Edition update that’s seen players return to the Commonwealth, to varying degrees of success…
Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition wasn’t quite the deal fans hoped it’d be as it inadvertently erased loads of modded save files and added very little in terms of new content.
It even removed one of the game’s best songs from the Diamond Radio soundtrack.
Nevertheless Fallout 4 has seen a resurgence, and is probably in for a big one when season 2 of the TV series drops.
The current Steam charts say it had a 24-hour peak of 25,000, not bad for a 10 year-old game.
As such some of the game’s secrets and Easter eggs have been doing the rounds again, one of which you might have never seen in your countless playthroughs as it’s a completely random event.
While wandering the wasteland you might come across an NPC claiming to be Preston Garvey, one of the Minutemen you meet very early into your playthrough and can side with for the final missions of the game.
This imposter is dressed like Preston, carries the same weapon and assumes his identity to steal caps, which he claims are donations for the Minutemen’s cause.
YouTuber bizzzlekizzzle ran into the NPC after 3,000 hours of gameplay, during which he revealed to the faker that he was actually the General of the Minutemen, and as such knows he’s not actually Preston, causing him to flee.
Now I recall bumping into fake Preston during my own playthrough of the game years ago but there was a surprising number of commenters who had no idea he existed.
“My first time ever even learning there IS a Fake Preston Garvey” read one of the comments, with another adding they “didn’t see him until my survival playthrough.”
If you haven’t encountered him yourself it’s likely because you used fast-travel to get around, as most random encounters occur whilst you’re wandering the wasteland.
For the best Fallout 4 experience try to stick to the roads when you’re travelling to your next objective, as it increases the chance of bumping into an encounter like this.
Fallout 4 is a game that clearly still has plenty of secrets for players to uncover, and we can’t wait for the inevitable release of Fallout 5 to give us ten times the interaction when it eventually launches.
