The best 2D and 3D platformers in 2025

Platformer video games have been around forever and hold a special place in players’ hearts. Whether in 2D or 3D, retro or ultra-modern, they stand out thanks to their level design, artistic direction, or simply the hidden messages they convey. While the concept may seem simple at first glance, some titles have managed to turn it into a truly memorable adventure. Let’s take a look at our selection of the best productions in the genre.

We begin our list with some charming 2D titles. Released very recently, Hollow Knight: Silksong caused a massive wave of excitement among players. This demanding metroidvania had been eagerly anticipated for years—so much so that online store pages crashed on launch day. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, an Ubisoft production, was also warmly received upon release. It transports players into a world inspired by Persian mythology, where bending the limits of space and time becomes essential to reaching one’s goals. Equally dynamic, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, the second entry in the franchise, is a must-play. Its atmosphere is truly unique, and the creatures you encounter certainly won’t leave you indifferent.

For a gentler approach while staying in the 2D style, titles like Shift Happens or Unravel Two are great picks. The latter offers a poetic cooperative adventure in which two adorable yarn characters are physically connected. Together, they must solve puzzles and overcome the obstacles that stand in their way. Still in the puzzle-oriented style, Limbo is a strong alternative with a distinctive visual identity: a black-and-white world that is instantly recognizable.

Now let’s move on to 3D platformers. They allow for more freedom of movement than their 2D counterparts, often resulting in very different mechanics. Ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2020, Super Mario Galaxy can make the heads of side-scrolling enthusiasts spin. It takes players on a colorful journey across numerous planets in search of as many stars as possible. A critical success, Astro Bot was crowned Game of the Year at the 2024 Game Awards. While it may not revolutionize the formula at first glance, the game displays perfect mastery of pacing, technical execution, and gameplay.

Finally, some wonderful platformers are designed for two-player cooperation. Split Fiction, praised by critics and the latest release from Hazelight Studios after the excellent It Takes Two, is arguably one of the genre’s strongest contenders. This time, players step into the shoes of two young writers trapped inside virtual worlds, who must help each other escape and regain their freedom. For an equally delightful experience, PlayStation’s Sackboy: A Big Adventure brings players into a wool-crafted world full of wonders. Numerous collectibles unlock a wide variety of skins, each cuter than the last. And for a touch of nostalgia, PAC-MAN WORLD 2 Re-PAC completely reimagines the beloved classic. Although its release flew a bit under the radar, it still charms anyone who gives it a try.

Over the years, the platformer genre has proven it can stand the test of time without losing any of its magic. Whether you’re nostalgic for the great classics or eager to discover indie gems, there’s something for everyone—and many more to come. Choosing the best platformers was no easy task, and many exceptional titles remain to be showcased in an upcoming Part 2. Until then, happy gaming!
