Mafia: The Old Country has just dropped a new free update today, bringing several new features to the game.
When I reviewed Mafia: The Old Country earlier this year, I generally liked what the GTA-like game was going for, but it had several shortcomings.
Hangar 13 included races, combat, and character customisation throughout the game, but I felt that Mafia: The Old Country’s linearity meant these features weren’t being utilised to their fullest potential.
There was an optional explore mode available, at least, but there wasn’t really much to do in it. However, Hangar 13 did announce not long after launch that it would be expanding the game with new features.
New content comes to Mafia: The Old Country
The Free Ride Update arrives in Mafia: The Old Country today, and expands the game with a bunch of new features and addons to keep you playing just a little bit longer beyond the game’s end credits.
For starters, there are some new open-world activities to do once you’ve completed the game. You’re able to explore the world in a new “freeform” mode, taking on new stealth and combat challenges in pre-determined locations.
You can also take part in car and horse races similar to the few that appear during the story, which could have arguably been one of the best parts of Mafia: The Old Country if they weren’t so scripted. Hopefully that won’t be the case here.

Meanwhile, Hangar 13 has also added a load of new cars, outfits, weapons and charms to collect, as well as a new Classic difficulty mode, which should be reason enough to give the story another play.
Classic difficulty has been a feature included in previous Mafia games, typically doing more than just making enemies hit harder.
For example, Mafia: Definitive Edition’s classic difficulty reduced the driving assists on vehicles, changed how ammo works, and made melee combat a lot deeper.
The update also adds a few smaller features that fans will appreciate, such as first-person driving and a “Cinema Siciliano” mode, which adds a vintage film filter similar to Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei’s Kurosawa Mode.
There’s also a new photo mode, so you can capture the beauty of the Sicilian countryside.
Everything included in this update comes to the PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 versions of Mafia: The Old Country at some point today as a free patch.
