This had been the subject of speculation for several years and was finally revealed by NCSOFT this week. We got our first look at Horizon Steel Frontiers, an eagerly awaited MMORPG coming to iOS, Android, and PC (via PURPLE, NCSOFT’s connected gaming platform).
This massively multiplayer title will follow the formula of the single-player games available on PlayStation and PC. Each player will be able to create their own character by selecting one of the tribes from the franchise. In the Deadlands, we will have the opportunity to hunt machines together in a vast open world. The combat system is largely inspired by that of the other episodes and will allow players to participate in large-scale raids.
Jan-Bart van Beek, director of Guerrilla Games studio, had a few words to say about the project.
“From the moment this franchise was created, we imagined the world of Horizon as one that could be explored in multiple ways. Horizon Steel Frontiers is a full-fledged MMORPG developed by NCSOFT specifically for mobile devices. With Steel Frontiers, immerse yourself in this universe wherever you are, whenever you want.
In this region called the Deadlands, inspired by Arizona and New Mexico, players take on the role of machine hunters in search of opportunities. They share this territory with thousands of other players, sometimes collaborating to take down machines, and at other times fighting against rival tribes or for control of resources. This mix of cooperation and competition creates unpredictable and unexpected situations […]
At Guerrilla, we already have groups playing Horizon Steel Frontiers together in the office, and it’s really incredible. Whenever I get the chance to participate in a preliminary test phase, what strikes me is the unique atmosphere and tone of Steel Frontiers. The game has a unique identity, the result of the work of the developers at NCSOFT. But it fits perfectly into the Horizon universe, and that balance between the essence of Horizon and a touch of novelty is what really excites me about this project.”
Horizon Steel Frontiers doesn’t have a release date yet, but will be free on mobile devices and PC. We can therefore assume that there will be numerous microtransactions.
