PS5 Aiming for 90 Million Units by End of 2025, Says Sony CFO

The PlayStation 5 marks another undisputed success for Sony with 84.2 million shipments as of September 30th and effective domination over the Xbox Series X/S throughout this generation. However, Sony is aiming even higher. In a post-financial results earnings call, CFO Lin Tao announced that the company is looking at 90 million units by the end of the year.

“The game business for next year… First, we have to focus on the year-end season and try to expand the installed-based units so that we can have 90 million units by the time we start next year,” she said. It’s a lofty goal, as the company needs to sell 5.8 million units by December 31st. Keep in mind that it shipped, not sold, 3.9 million in the last financial quarter.

Then again, with the release of Ghost of Yōtei, which sold 3.3 million units in its first month, and the impending Holiday season, it could very well hit that milestone. That’s not even accounting for sales like Black Friday in the United States.

Other notable quotes from the earnings call include Destiny 2’s disappointing performance, which resulted in losses amounting to ¥31.5 billion (roughly $204.4 million) for Sony. Marathon is also still scheduled for release by March 31st, 2026, but a release date has yet to be announced.
