The PlayStation Portalās streaming capabilities currently allow users to either stream games from their PS5 to the handheld device or stream select games directly to the device without the console. However, a new leak may suggest that a new streaming feature may be on the way.
PS Portal may allow players to stream owned PS5, PS4 games
According to a Reddit post by GetTheWetsOn on the PlayStation Portal subreddit, a new feature is listed on games found on the PS Store when using the PS App. Specifically, the message read, āBuy this game, and then stream and play instantly on PS Portal or PS5 (only with PS Plus Premium).ā This seems to suggest that players will be able to buy a game and stream it on their PS Portal device, no PS5 required.
The message has since been removed from the PS Store, so it seems Sony isnāt quite yet ready to let players know about the feature. For now, it may be wise to take this with a grain of salt, as we currently donāt know when or if the company plans to actually implement this PS Portal streaming feature.
For those who are unaware, the PS Portal allows players to stream games they own and have downloaded on their PS5 to the handheld device. Itās essentially like the video game equivalent of casting a YouTube video to a TV. Obviously, itās a bit of a different experience, as there are input delays involved with streaming games, but it is streaming from one household device to another, and it requires that other device to be functional. It also doesnāt require a PS Plus Premium subscription, which brings us to cloud streaming.
Cloud streaming with the PS Portal does require a PS Plus Premium subscription, and it does not currently allow players to just cloud stream any game using the feature. Players have to choose from its Game and Classic Catalog, which includes a ton of games from PlayStationās history. For example, player who wanted to could not cloud stream Silent Hill f to their PS Portal. However, if they wanted to cloud stream Cyberpunk 2077, a game currently available in the Game Catalog, that is totally possible. This new leaked feature seems to suggest that players will be able to buy games and cloud stream them to their PS Portal devices, even if it is not available through the PS Plus Game Catalog.
