David Cage (Quantic Dream) talks about AI and the studio’s project

Last week, Quantic Dream officially announced a new game called Spellcasters Chronicles. This free-to-play action-strategy game is a radical departure from the narrative experiences usually offered by the French studio.

In an interview with Le Figaro, David Cage, the company’s founder and president, discussed this announcement and a recurring topic in the gaming industry. He was asked about his teams’ use of generative artificial intelligence.

Cage confirmed that Quantic Dream uses AI solely for the purpose of performing “tedious tasks” and “saving time.” For the moment, artificial intelligence is not being used to create in-game elements. It is mainly used to “identify bugs in a program, quickly create visual references, speed up processing, and improve the quality of certain data.”

As for Spellcasters Chronicles, David Cage was keen to clarify a rumor. Some internet users believe that the multiplayer title may have been commissioned by NetEase, the studio’s majority shareholder since August 2022. This rumor was dismissed by the French creator, who pointed out that the Chinese giant is a real source of support and expertise.

“The acquisition by NetEase gave us the financial means to achieve our ambitions and was particularly important for sharing expertise and multiplayer technology, an area in which NetEase has gained exceptional experience with games such as Marvel Rivals. We also wanted to take a humble and rational approach: we are aware that we are entering a new genre, we are testing the game extensively to gather player feedback, and we want to build this experience with them.”

Finally, David Cage obviously had a few words to say about Star Wars Eclipse, which has been mobilizing “most of the resources in Paris and Montreal for several years”. The title will use Quantic Dream’s new in-house engine.
