2024’s best RPG just got a price cut as fans hope for a sequel reveal this week

Square Enix has announced a permanent price cut for one of their best games and some suspect it heralds an imminent sequel announcement.

It’s not even been a month since Final Fantasy 7 Remake was ported to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S, and Square Enix has already announced a date for when the sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, will arrive on those platforms.

As shared in the latest Nintendo Direct, the Rebirth port launches on June 3, meaning Nintendo and Xbox owners can catch up on the remake’s storyline ahead of the eventual third game, which will close out the trilogy.

Both the Switch 2 and Xbox versions are offering temporary discounts to incentivise pre-orders, but it’s worth grabbing a PlayStation 5 or PC copy if you haven’t already, as those versions are now permanently cheaper.

How much is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?

Initially sold at £69.99, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is now substantially cheaper: £49.99 on the PlayStation Store and an even more enticing £39.99 on Steam.

Square Enix’s discounts also extend to all the special editions of the game, which we’ve listed below:

  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Digital Deluxe Edition – £64.99 on PlayStation 5 or £54.99 on Steam
  • Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth Twin Pack – £74.99 on PlayStation 5 or £63.99 on Steam
  • Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth Digital Deluxe Twin Pack – £94.99 on PlayStation 5 or £79.99 on Steam

If you’re a Switch 2 or Xbox owner, both versions can be pre-ordered at £39.99 for the standard edition and £51.99 for the deluxe edition on Nintendo and Microsoft’s respective storefronts. They’ll go back up to full price after launch, but they’ll still be in line with the new PlayStation 5 prices.

We highly recommend Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, as not only is it an improvement over Final Fantasy 7 Remake (which we also enjoyed), but we named it our Game of the Year for 2024.

Unfortunately, its quality didn’t translate into sales, with Square Enix admitting that Rebirth failed to meet expectations. However, this can be chalked up to it being a sequel and thus less appealing to anyone who skipped the first game (or didn’t like it) as well as its initial PlayStation 5 exclusivity.

In fact, this (plus Final Fantasy 16 suffering a similar fate) is no doubt what prompted Square Enix to ditch exclusivity deals and embrace more multiplatform releases.

Between these ports and discounts, it’s clear Square Enix is doing what it can to bolster sales and get more people on board so that they’ll be more likely to buy the third instalment when it launches.

When is Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 releasing?

Square Enix has kept most details about the untitled Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 close to its chest, but there’s growing suspicion that a formal reveal will take place this year.

For starters, following the Switch 2 and Xbox announcements for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, director Naoki Hamaguchi took to X to say, ‘This year, we plan to share more updates on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Project than ever before.’

Given Square Enix’s ties with PlayStation, some theorise that a trailer for Part 3 will be shown at this week’s State of Play. However, insider NateTheHate recently speculated that an announcement will be saved for after Rebirth’s Switch 2 and Xbox launch in June, since that will line up with Summer Game Fest.

He also posited that Part 3 will be a multiplatform launch and not a timed PlayStation 5 exclusive like the last two games. This seems to be his own theorising, but it would make perfect sense given the aforementioned sales woes.

As for a release date, there are no solid rumours, but considering there was a roughly four year gap between the first two games, it’s likely Part 3 will launch in 2028.

That said, in an Automaton interview last September, Hamaguchi commented on how development on Part 3 was going ‘extremely well.’

‘A lot of the content is already playable, and the game’s direction and form are firmly set in place. Right now, the team is united around refining everything,’ said Hamaguchi.

This has sparked some speculation that Part 3 could launch in 2027. It wouldn’t be shocking if Square Enix was aiming for that because 2027 also marks the 30th anniversary of the original Final Fantasy 7, and closing out the remake trilogy at that time would be a perfect way to mark the occasion.
