Rumours point to some kind of major Star Wars announcement at The Game Awards 2025, but the two most common theories contradict one another.

With The Game Awards 2025 just a few days away, speculation regarding what new games will be shown during the show has naturally been accelerating.

There’s been quite a bit of chatter about Star Wars in particular, but conflicting rumours and theories means nobody can quite agree on what sort of Star Wars game could be revealed.

In an effort to make some sense of it all, we’ve looked through all the recent rumours and speculation to see if we can figure out what, if any Star Wars game will make an appearance.

What is the new Star Wars game reveal at The Game Awards 2025?

Initially, it was theorised that The Game Awards will debut a Total War: Star Wars game; something we personally would be 100% on board with.

Last year, such a project was reported to be in the works at Total War developer Creative Assembly, alongside a Total War version of Warhammer 40,000.

Then, last week, a Total War anniversary showcase aired, which saw Creative Assembly announce Total War: Medieval 3. However, the studio also teased a second ‘fantasy’ project whose reveal it’s saving for The Game Awards.

Ahead of that showcase, though, an insider known as Kurakasis claimed that a big Star Wars game announcement would be happening soon; one unrelated to already announced titles Star Wars Zero Company and Star Wars: Eclipse.

Given the timing, many argued this bolstered the odds of Total War: Star Wars being the secret announcement, but a subsequent post by Kurakasis muddied the waters a bit, as they said this upcoming Star Wars game’s title ends with ‘The Old Republic.’

Despite the vaguery, the most obvious thing they could be referring to is the Knights Of The Old Republic remake that was announced in 2021 and is infamous for its, shall we say… tumultuous development cycle.

The only updates the project has had since then are that its changed developers – passing from Aspyr to Saber Interactive – and is still in the works, so it could do with a major re-reveal if Disney wants to assuage concerns that the game won’t ever see the light of day.

What is the new Total War game reveal at The Game Awards 2025?

However, Kurakasis’ choice of words means there’s room for doubt. The Old Republic is an entire era in Star Wars canon, and one there’s been repeated rumours of Disney wanting to expand on, for movies and TV, as well as just games. So what if their hint is still for Total War: Star Wars but it’s set during the Old Republic?

That does make some kind of sense – it would essentially be a historical Total War game from a Star Wars perspective – but the most recent evidence points towards the Total War reveal being Warhammer 40,000.

Eagle-eyed fans took a closer look at the Total War anniversary showcase and spotted an interesting detail. While highlighting the game engine used for Total War, you can see a list of files that Sega probably didn’t realise would be visible. It goes by very quickly but Redditor knavbot grabbed a screenshot and while they’re a tad blurry, closer inspection shows some labels have ‘40k’ in the name.

40K is common shorthand for Warhammer 40,000, so fans have been quick to assume that a Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is what will be announced at The Game Awards, not Star Wars.

Is there going to be a Knights Of The Old Republic 2 remake?

New details about the Knights Of The Old Republic remake have also surfaced thanks to a Game File report, specifically that Mad Head Games (a subsidiary of Saber Interactive) is handling development.

Nothing’s officially confirmed but Mad Head’s website does mention it’s working on an unannounced AAA project ‘based on a famous and beloved IP that fans will eagerly anticipate.’

Curiously, Game File also reports that there are plans for a remake of Knights Of The Old Republic 2 as well, and that it’s already been in active development since March.

Strangely, this project is in the works at Aspyr, which was the original developer behind the first Knights Of The Old Republic remake and which has no experience whatsoever with a project that big.

Considering the original project was taken away from Aspyr, we’re not sure why Lucasfilm Games would let it handle the sequel instead, but Game File seems adamant and they are a usually reliable source.

Whatever the case, unless there happens to be another unrelated Old Republic game churning away in the background, early signs point to a re-reveal for the aforementioned remake.

That’s welcome in theory, but given Saber has only had a few years working on the game, it’s hard to imagine that it’s very far along or that what they show will be anything other than carefully prepared footage purely for The Game Awards.

It also remains to be seen whether the game is still a PlayStation 5 exclusive, as Sony’s gone out of its way to distance itself from the game over the last few years, and not without reason given everything that’s gone on so far.
